Module 1: Reflection of Learning

 Module #1: Reflection of Learning

"How are kids different today?"

"How is technology changing the way we learn and teach?"

The ISTE Standards for Students:

Are these standards similar to your expectations of learners? What is different?

These standards are similar to my expectations of learners. The following chart explains what I currently do as an educator in these areas and outlines what standard I would like to explore further to support my students learning.

Digital Citizen

-This is an area I always start off with before students receive their Chrome books and logins.

-Our discussion sets the framework and norms for future tasks we will be completing throughout the year.

- We have a discussion of what it means to be a responsible digital citizen. I find students generally have prior knowledge in this area from discussions at home, playing video games, or computer games online.

-I find this youtube video helpful for setting the stage :Being a Good Digital Citizen

-Throughout the year and with every task we go over norms for being a responsible digital citizen.

Empowered Learner

-Integrating various technologies to help students achieve their learning goals is a fundamental step when planning instruction. Attempting to give learners the opportunity to have a wide selection of choices where their learning style is reflected.

Knowledge Constructor

-Teaching students the skills on how to conduct research appropriately to gain relevant and credible information is an overall expectation for learners.

-This standard is the one I recognized immediately as being embedded within the Nova Scotia curriculum.

Innovative Designer

-Creating opportunities for students to problem solve by finding creative solutions is a standard that I thoroughly enjoy planning.

-I have been lucky to have maker spaces at the schools I have worked in and have helped develop a makerspace for students. Within a makerspace there are lots of low tech and high tech options to engage learners in the creative process of problem solving.

-Coding is an area that really allows students to be creative problem solvers and to learn from each other that there are multiple ways in solving a problem.

Computational Thinker

-I enjoy having students solve problems together and find multiple ways to go about solving a problem using technology. I feel there are a lot of great challenges that engage students in computational thinking. A website that I often use is https://microbit.org/projects/. Microbits always have great challenges that apply to real life contexts.

Creative Communicator

I enjoy giving my students multiple options to present information. I like to do app smashing and show students how to use multiple tools that will help them express their understanding.

Global Collaborator

This is an area I would like to do more within. I feel I give students multiple ways to collaborate with their classmates, but would like to reach out to connecting locally and globally. This year students completed a plan for community service projects. Unfortunately, we were not able to complete the service projects due to school closures for the pandemic. However, I can see how next year it would be beneficial to reach out to members in the community who are involved in service projects and have students ask questions and share ideas.

In regards to collaborating globally, we were able to participate within the global read aloud and were able to connect with other classes in Canada and the United States to discuss a book we read together. It was great to see students being able to learn about different areas and cultures as well as have meaningful discussion about topics and issues related to the book. I am curious to learn and explore other safe options to be able to have my students develop the skills under this standard.

"Comparing Frameworks for 21st Century Skills" by Dr. Chris Dede

Dede identified the following skills to to compete with automation and ensure students are learning 21st skills:

Expert thinking-The ability to think outside the box and to problem solve

Complex Communication- The ability to adjust verbal and non verbal communication in complex social environments

Working Collaboratively- The ability to work with a group of people in digital and non-digital environments to accomplish the same goal or task

Data Collector- The ability to filter through large amounts of data and information based on relevancy and unbiased to make an informed decision

Applying Problem Solving to Real Life Contexts-ensuring educators create a learning environment where students apply knowledge to real word contexts

ICT Literacy- Ensuring students are proficient using technology in multiple ways. Also ensuring student's understand digital citizenship.

The following video "Skills Every Child Will Need to Succeed in 21st century by Dr. Laura" also looks at the social and emotional component of 21st century skills. I remember the video from a PD I had this year and thought it was an interesting perspective:
